Concrete Patio and Pergola with Planter Boxes and Cable Railing | Rockwall, TX

Concrete patio and cedar pergola built in Rockwall, TX with planter boxes, integrated steps, flagstone accents, and modern cable railing on a sloped backyard.

Project Overview

This project involved designing and building a custom concrete patio and pergola system for a sloped backyard in Rockwall, Texas. The homeowners wanted a clean, usable outdoor space that worked with the grade of the yard while maintaining open sightlines and a modern feel.

To accomplish this, we created a raised concrete patio with integrated planter boxes along the back edge, a side staircase for safe access to the lower yard, and a cedar pergola for shade and structure. The design allows the patio to function without feeling boxed in, while still addressing elevation changes and drainage.

Scope of Work

  • Excavation and grading to accommodate a sloped backyard, including irrigation adjustments

  • Formed and poured a raised concrete patio

  • Built integrated concrete planter boxes along the rear of the patio

  • Installed a concrete staircase along one side for yard access

  • Added natural flagstone caps to planter boxes and patio edges

  • Constructed a cedar pergola anchored to the concrete slab

  • Installed modern cable railing for safety without obstructing views

  • Final grading and cleanup to blend the new structure into the yard

Design Notes

The planter boxes serve both a functional and visual purpose, helping retain grade while softening the hardscape with landscaping. Flagstone accents were added to tie the concrete into the surrounding yard and give the patio a more finished, custom look.

Cable railing was selected to meet safety needs while keeping the backyard visually open, especially important given the elevation change. The cedar pergola provides shade and architectural interest without overwhelming the space.
